We pleased to be currently featuring local artist,

HILLARY BROWNE

I have dealt with depression and anxiety my entire life. Sometimes, it is bearable. Sometimes, it is not. The times it is not are often tossed at me out of nowhere: no lead-up, no warning, no specific circumstances to blame it on, just BAM: incapacitated. Having a dog on the days I fall incapacitated forces me to capacitate. I have to get up. I have to go outside. In this way, dogs have saved my life and dogs will continue to save my life for as long as I am living it. With these portraits, I am trying to tell the viewer about the connection that is possible between a human and a dog. Forming a bond with a dog is as easy as taking their picture: all you have to do is ask. Dogs have an infinite capacity for love. They thrive from giving it and they thrive from receiving it. Their love is unconditional, uncomplicated, and healing. They want you to push your relationship with them ever closer. As for my own dog, Harvey, I once saw a documentary about the world of competitive dog grooming. One dog owner described her pet as her “creative partner.” I have been unable to think of Harvey as anything else since. I view my partnership with Harvey as a tool to communicate the two messages I most passionately believe in: that sharing your life with a dog can be your greatest source of joy and love, and to adopt your pet from an animal rescue. They will rescue you right back.
